Despite macular degeneration being one of the leading causes of partial blindness in the United States, the causes of this disease are not very well known. Some of the risk factors that are determined are related to genetic links within families, excessive exposure to ultra-violet rays from the sun, smoking and hypertension among other causes. The condition is relatively more common in women and people with blue or light colored eyes.

Diagnostic tests for Macular Degeneration include acuity tests which measures the accuracy of the central vision at specific distances in specific lighting situations. The Amsler Grid test checks for spots of sight loss. Color tests help to determine the status of the cone cells, the retinal cells that interpret color. The Fluorescein Angiogram test allows a doctor to visualize the inner structure of the eye. Photos are taken of the retina and the macula so as to identify new blood vessel growth and leakage from blood vessels.

There is no form of treatment that is known to stop the progression of dry macular degeneration, although vitamin supplements are often prescribed. Once the retinal tissues are affected, little can be done to stop its slow progression.

Wet macular degeneration has been controlled through laser treatments, provided it is performed at an early stage of the condition. The laser treatment seals the leaking blood vessels closed, halting the damage inflicted upon the retina. Laser photocoagulation also helps some people with wet macular degeneration but it does not restore lost vision. Treatments for age-related macular degeneration are very limited and laser treatment is the only proven treatment which stops age related macular degeneration.

Even though the treatments for macular degeneration are not always successful, there are a lot of new treatments coming up to increase the success rates of cures.
